Discussion Questions 2/29

1. I tend to feel that Bulstrode's karma is cathing up to him, are all the unfortunate events just that wrong place wrong time or Bulstrode getting his just desserts?

2.Why must Dorothea stand up for Lydgate? I understand that with Causabon's death Dorothea has been elevated to another status within the rankings of Middlemarch. Why must she feel the need to interfer in such a emotionally messy situation?

  1. #1: Isn't it both? Bulstrode isn't the worst villain in the world, but he does make some immoral choices. However, he also has some bad luck.

#2: Because it's the right thing to do?

  2. I kind of disagree with Dr. H's comment to the second question... Yes, perhaps it is the right thing to do under certain circumstances, but maybe not for Dorothea. Maybe like all of the other people from Middlemarch (Middlemarchians? Middlemarchites? Middlers of March?), she just can't keep her nose out of the business of others. While she's not spreading gossip, she's still getting involved. It may be for a good reason, but I think it's just putting more of a burden on her. She has her own problems. She does not need to take on those of everyone else. That will just wear her out.
