Discussion Questions for Wednesday Feb. 8th

Everybody's Protest Novel: James Baldwin

Question 1:
In this section of the book, Baldwin talks about Uncle Tom's Cabin as a whole and it's meaning of truth and a lie. His opinion is that it is mainly about the rejection of life, the beauty of one self and culture. What I want to know is do you feel that as Stowe was writing the book that it reflected how she felt as a white woman in society, how it impacted her religious beliefs (while giving Tom and Eva a more religious character) and if she felt guilty for what she might have witnessed?

Pictures (Pages 409-422)
Question 2: While looking at the pictures all I could see were my friends who are African American and how they would feel if they walked by these ads or read them in the newspaper. It's heart-wrenching to see these words, and yet still hear them today. My question is in what way has discrimination changed and how is it still viewed in society, and even on campus? (Discrimination does occur on campus wether we see it or not)
