While reading
Middlemarch, I feel like I am ADD, with my mind going a million other places
instead of focusing on this read. I
realize that life is going on right now, and the perhaps is the main reason I
am unable to sit and focus on this book and in all honestly, having a hard time
comprehending what I have just read.
Today in class we discussed wither or not people liked the character Dorthea,
and there was a lot of dislike portrayed towards her. I feel that often in
books, the strong female character is disliked. Thinking about it, the most
memorable female characters, that are strong, are ones that are not liked. The
character that springs to mind the most right now when thinking of Dorthea is
Scarlett O’hara, from the book, not the movie. Dorthea, like Scarlett is often
viewed at first glance as a kind-hearted and honest woman. Unfortunately, both
of these characters, when one gets to know them are not liked at all. Both
characters married men, that are not good matches for them, and are doomed in
that department. I hope that Dorthea learns to own her inner “bitchy” side like
Scarlett does.
I feel the same way about this book. I cannot focus on a single thing... but I like the points you make here. Strong female characters always get belittled. Bitchy sides can be ok... right?
ReplyDeleteI really like this thread...it is so true that strong women get dismissed as bitchy. I am not sure that's exactly what's going on with Dorothea, but keep an eye on it!
