Hardships

Ruth Hall is a character that is to be admired. Even though we haven't read the book through yet, she seems like she is very adaptable to any situation. She is a strong woman, and I'll use this quote to make my point. "A strong woman is not the one who doesn't cry. A strong woman is the one who sheds tears for a moment, picks up her sword, and lives to fight another day knowing her sword will be sharper, stronger tomorrow because of it." So I'm quoting facebook, so what?! Anyway, this is my wish for Ruth Hall. She is a woman who was weak when she married her husband. I believe the marriage was a good one, but Ruth was not prepared for his death. She had to prepare herself through struggles and hardships. Fortunately, nothing terribly wrong has happened to her yet (being unsafe, taken advantage of etc.). I know that Ruth is stronger now than she was when she got married. She has to protect her daughters and herself. I hope she is able to overcome all of her obstacles despite her in-laws, and her terrible brother, and her dad, and the people at the school.
Everything so far seems like it is pretty straight forward, no reading between the lines like in Middlemarch. What do you think?
I found the italics button!

  1. I absolutely loved your post, very beautiful and true. Being strong is something I find very admirable in a person, especially in a woman. It's so important to me, that I even created a tattoo for myself, and everytime I look at it, it reminds me of what I have gone through and where I am now. Ruth has gone through so much and the fact that she has overcome every challenge is very inspiring for her readers and for women in society.

  2. For me, Ruth becomes a strong character after her husband's death. (Although, we certainly see this strength brewing when Daisy dies.) It is interesting to note that often times strength comes from hardship. It is also interesting that Ruth's strength appears after Harry's death. She has no choice but to be an active, working woman. I'm glad that Ruth doesn't get remarried. Although life is pretty hard for her right now, I like seeing the independent woman.
