Cranford is a town with few wealthy men, but plenty
of lower-class men, thus providing tension among the maids of the town. Discuss
the appearance of “followers” in the novel. How is Miss Matty’s opinion changed
toward her maid’s relationships? What role do the few men that appear in the
novel have?
Gaskell’s work is
a snapshot of small-town Victorian life. Is her work limited at all by her
narrow focus? Though it depicts a very specific time and place, can this novel
be considered timeless?
I think the ladies in the novel are afraid of love. It would change their circumstances and make their lives complicated. The status quo seems to be working out just fine for them and that is the way they like it. Then something happens that forces them to change, Matty loses her life savings. The status quo is suddenly changed and the ladies realize that they cannot keep doing the same things the same way. They pull together and create a better life for Matty and for themselves because they realize what they need to do to help one of their own.
